Athletics
At
Mount Michael Benedictine, athletics play an important role in the
"development of the whole person". Whether it's in the
intramural program or in inter-school competition, Mount Michael
students are known for giving their all. Because the school is small
and every man is needed, students often find they possess more athletic
talent than they thought possible.
Because students play hard
and our experienced coaching staff is adept at encouraging and
developing
talent, Mount Michael has a tradition of excellence in sports.
In the past 20 years, the Knights have claimed State Championships
or State Runner-Up honors sixteen times. In its brief 38-year
history, Mount Michael has won over twenty state championships.
In
addition to its intra-mural program, Mount Michael offers the following
varsity sports: Football, Cross Country, Tennis, Basketball, Soccer,
Track, Golf, Wrestling, and American Legion Baseball.
To
foster involvement and the development of talent, all freshmen are
required to participate in a fall sport and a spring sport or an
intra-mural activity. At Mount Michael, we believe that every student
can find valuable lessons of sportsmanship, teamwork, and fair play
by participating in athletics.
Athletics play an important
role in the life of the community as well. Parents, alumni, alumni
parents, and girlfriends of current students come out to support
the various teams. The Mount Michael gym, affectionately known as
"The Palace", has a history of many exciting evenings
for both Mount Michael fans and their opponents. The Mount Michael
basketball team is widely known for its "sixth man". The
entire student body stands throughout every game chanting encouragement
to the players.
