For the past two months, the
Mount Michael Swimming/Diving team has been working and practicing
their sport, largely unnoticed by the large majority of the school.
Every day after school, these aquatic sportsmen leave for Burke
High School where the Bulldogs and the Knights have teamed up for
swimming and diving. The Burke team calls the Mount's swimmers "Bull-Knights",
but the Burke team is really glad to have some extra help for the
season. The swimmers and the diver are truly athletes because their
effort goes on largely without much fanfare by the majority of the
school.
The swimming team consists
of six hard-working members. The mighty seniors
include Brandon Hankey, Will Kenney and Dick Akromis, and just below
them is an all-star junior, Erik Patton. The only sophomore is a
miraculous diver, Drew Delashmutt. And, last, but not least, freshman
Mike Patton who makes it all look too easy. Overall, the swimmers
are very proud of their season so far. Hankey said, "I am very
proud of our guys this season. We have really come together as a
team and have made a difference on the Burke team. I would encourage
more Mount Michael students to join the swimming team."
The record of the swimming
team comes out to an above-average season for the Bull-Knights.
Erik Patton stated, "Our season has been going well, even though
the food is bad. We (the team), all find aquatic sports challenging
and fun." The success is largely due to the Patton brothers
who moved to Omaha from Hawaii this summer and have led the Knight
section of the team to some
great accomplishments. "We love to go the pool every day after
school. Plus, the Burke divers are really hot." Mike Patton
said. The swimming section of the team is very proud of their season
and can't wait for the State Swimming and Diving Meet on the first
of March.
The Mount Michael diving
team has only one member this year, who is quite talented. Diver
Drew Delashmutt is a very accomplished and decorated in his sport.
In the past season, Delashmutt has placed second or third in all
of the meets held. Delashmutt stated, "I love the sport and
love competing for Mount Michael and going to practice after school.
There are definitely girls in swimsuits there!" Delashmutt
hopes to place first in the upcoming state meet and upset his long-time
rival, Brian Biga. "I am really excited for the meet.",
Delashmutt said. "I'm really glad to have a chance to compete
for the Knights." - Ben Hankey
