Spring Concert Lifts Spirits

On Wednesday, March 12, 2003, the Mount Michael band and strings group provided an uplifting concert for the community. Students, parents and members of the monastic community all found the concert a nice break from the usual grind. The concert started with two pieces by Mozart. The first, "Trio Sonata, K. 254", featured violinist Addison Killeen and Zach Pluhacek on the cello. Following a strong round of applause, Chris Park took over. Park played "Sonata 11", a fast-paced piano number. Everyone was amazed by the sheer speed and precision of Park's finger movement. Regarding the first two pieces, sophomore Drew DeLashmutt said, "Mozart has always been my favorite classical artist, so I was glad to hear some of his compositions played so well."
The Mount Michael band took over from there. Months of hard work really paid off for the entire group. Every song was played with confidence and sounded crisp and clean. The large trumpet and saxophone sections led the way on most of the songs. "In the Mood", "Embraceable You", "St. Louis Blues", "Midnight Memories", and "Birdland" were all played in an uplifting and fun manner. Sophomore trombone player Matt Haas said, "I think we did pretty well, it was worth all the work."
Killeen and Pluhacek concluded the night with two Irish string pieces, "Londonderry Air" and "Drowsy Maggie." The upbeat tempo was a good prelude to the upcoming spring season. Overall, the performance was impressive. Band instructor Mrs. Marylin Theis said, "The performance went well, I am grateful to the audience, and for the student support."~Article and pictures by Brent Lockee video by David Nelson
