 More than 1.3 million juniors in over 21,000 U.S. high schools
entered the 2004 National Merit Program by taking the 2002 Preliminary
SAT/National Merit Scholorship Qualifying Test.
Just recently three
Mount Michael seniors were recognized by the National Merit Scholorship
Corporation. Andrew Huss and Ben Swiniarski
were named "2004 National Merit Semi-Finalists" while
Mike Lundgren was named a Commendend Student.
As
a "Commended Student" Mike
Lundgren ranks among the top 5% nationally who took the test. Andrew
Huss and Ben Swiniarski
as "Semi-finalists", are recognized as belonging to
the nation's top 1% of participants. Andrew and Ben will go on
to be
considered as finalists for National Merit Scholorship Awards. Every
Finalist will compete for one of 8,000 National Merit
Scholarships Awards, worth $32 million, that will be offered next
spring.
Merit Scholorship Awards: Three types of Merit
Scholorship Awards will be offered in 2004. 2,500 National Merit
$2500 Scholarship Awards will be awarded on a state representational
basis.
In addition,
some
300
corporations
and
business organizations
will
underwrited about 1,100 corporate-sponsored scholarships for
Finalist who meet their specificied critera. Also, about 200 colleges
and
universities are expected to finance some 4,400 college-sponsored
Merit Scholorship awards for Finalists who will attend the sponsoring
institution.
