Jack and the Giant Beanstock     For the Mount Michael musical this fall, the Masquers put on a production of "Into the Woods". Directed by Mark Robinson and musical direction by Marilynn Theis, the play is divided into two acts with an intermission in between. The entire production lasted two hours.
The story takes elements from many popular, classic fairy tales such as Cinderella and Jack and the Bean Stock and adds a twist of comedy. The story revolves around a baker and his wife, played by Tim Agnew and Lauren Medici. They must lift the curse of childlessness set upon them by an old witch by collecting signature items from the other fairy tale characters such as Rapunzel’s hair and Little Red Ridinghood’s cloak.
Besides their quest for a child and a cure, there are other small stories and problems set into action around them. The giant’s wife for example comes down out of the sky and searches for Jack, her husband’s murderer, and in the process Cinderella's exceptionally ugly sistersmanages to pillage half the countryside.
The acting troupe performed superbly. The new freshmen actors performed admirably too, performing without being struck by stage fright. The actresses from the other schools such as Marian, Duchesne and Elkhorn also provided key roles, giving up much of their time and weekends to come out and practice.
The inaugural performance of the play was a big hit and it stayed that way for the performances over the weekend. Congratulations to all of the hard working cast and crew of the musical and good luck with the next one.
