Wednesday is a time for thought. In an unusual reprieve from classes,
Mount Michael students gathered in the chapel to reflect
on their lives. Lent is a time for self-improvement and reflection.
The day started at 8 a short ceremony with a talk by Father Michael.
Father Michael stressed the important of C.H.A.N.G.E. this Lenten season. Yes,
C.H.A.N.G.E. Father Michael started off with telling the students that he had
an acronym. Starting, of course, with C, which stands for Choice.
Choice is your ability to choose. To make decisions. Father Mike
stressed to the students that a choice must be made for CHANGE
to happen. Without choice,
nothing will get done! Father Mike said, "...you will not get better at
basketball unless you CHOOSE to go shoot some hoops, sitting in your room and
dreaming about it is just that--dreams."
Humility
is a necessary component of change. Father Mike began this letter by citing
the ancient Greek word: Hubris. Hubris is the natural pride that
humans
tend to develop that begins to make them think that they are just as powerful
as the gods. This pride always results in some sequence of events that ends
in the person's downfall. Humility may be hard to achieve, but it is needed.
Assistance. Even the best of us need it some times. When you are hurt or have
some sort of sickness, you go to the doctor, right? Father Mike questioned
why people go to the doctor and do not feel ashamed, but when they need help
emotionally
or spiritually they do not get help. Father Mike told the students that they
need help sometimes, even if that means going to a teacher for a little extra
help outside of class, asking a parent or loved one to talk. Assistance is
a necessary part of being a human being.
Now. Students are masters at procrastination. People have to do things now,
because things you do in the future, are just that, in the future. If one does
not take
the initiative nothing will ever get done.
Goals are needed by all. Without a purpose, there is no drive, without a drive,
there is no reason. A goal is something one must have and look forward to.
Effort. You need effort to achieve your goals and to achieve change. Work must
be done.
Father Mike concluded his talk to the students, and the Lenten promises were
burned to ashes. We got a short break before going to attend the sacrament
of Reconciliation. The seniors and sophomores received the sacrament in the
Armory
and the freshmen and juniors in the Chapel.
The day ended with
Mass, which was presided over by Father Michael. This day of reflection was
a great way to start one of the holiest periods in the Church
calendar. - Article and Pictures by Mason Tye
