| "Pick, you’re a midget,"
is the first thing this years athlete of the year, Mike Pick,
recalls Coach Kane saying to him. Pick, one of the two speakers
this year along with Colonel G. Owens, both reflected on their
lives and
their fathers influence on their lives.
The night began with socializing
during which students and their fathers could catch up on
each others weeks. Next salads were served and everybody took
their
seats. Table by table, students and their fathers were excused
to serve themselves a meal of fried chicken, roast beef, pasta,
green
beans, and twice baked potatoes. As if that weren’t enough
the waiters came around and served apple pie and ice cream for
dessert.
After everybody had eaten more than
their share of food, Men’s Club Presindent Gene Pieper came
to the podium and talked about the four years he had as a Mount
Michael father before introducing Jason Mackeprang. Mackeprang,
the Athletic Director at Mount Michael, introduced the athlete
of
the year, Mike Pick. Pick participated in football, basketball,
track, and baseball. Mike Pick has won several athletic awards,
including being named Arby’s Player of the Month twice, and
being named to the Great Northeastern Shootout First-team. In his
acceptance of the award, Mike
Pick reflected on the morals his father and other
coaches had instilled in him. He remembers his father telling him
"you should want the ball in your hands with the game on the line.As
for Pick winning the award, junior Ron Kmiecik said, “I
played with him for three years, he was a very hard worker and
I felt
he was
very deserving
of the
award.”
Following Pick’s speech, Gene
Pieper returned to introduce the guest speaker Colonel Owens. Owens
talked about his time at West Point, General McCarthur, and his
father’s influence in his life. “I feel as if Colonel
Owens conveyed his message to the fathers and sons very well,”
said sophomore Marc Jergovic.
