| For a long time, the editors
and writers of the Mount (the local newspaper here) had
to work in the library late at night the day before the paper was
due to get the news out to the students. Their main workspace was
the library, something used by all the students, and they did all
their work late at night in a space that wasn't their own. However,
there was a recent donation of computers
that, while not as good as the computers in the computer lab, are
still good enough to do what the journalism staff needs
done. But, when these computers were offered, the question was
raised as to where they would be put. The solution came to the
Journalism
staff and they moved them all into Mr. Buschelman’s old office,
and it became: The J-Lab.
The J-Lab has computers in it and each is hooked
up to the Mount Michael network so that the Journalism staff can work on the
paper as if they were in the library, and the J-Lab is also available for their
last-minute midnight sessions of finishing up the paper. While
the
name
does
sound
a
little
cheesy,
it
is a good facility for working on the newspaper and journalism designed to help
them finish the paper sooner and better, even outside of class.
David
Nelson
and
the journalism staff put a lot of time into getting the computers in the room,
hooked up to the network, and functioning properly with a scanner and dual
monitors (complete with fully-functioning recliner!)
The J-Lab will be a great tool for future classes and will help the Mount be
a better paper.
