Sophomore
Retreat
“Laughter is the best medicine.” This cliché was
the center of the sophomore class retreat of 2005. Listening,
Assertiveness, Understanding, Generosity, and Healing were
discussed as core qualities that every good Christian should
have. If the first letter of each word is combined, it spells
LAUGH.
The retreat was held at its traditional location of the Pro-Sanctity
Center, a retreat house just a few miles from Mount Michael,
on the 11th October. Throughout the retreat, Father Michael
Eckley, a parish priest, outlined these values and their importance
with the assistance of Father Dan, Brother August, and Sister
Carolyn. Father Michael employed an open, laid back way of
teaching. He showed the sophomore class moral lessons through
solving puzzles, playing hide-and-seek, wearing the wrong size
shoe, and even participating in an “interactive melodrama” of
the Good Samaritan.
In addition to the spiritual
part of the retreat, the sophomores enjoyed many activities
in their free time, such as playing
ping-pong and sand volleyball, participating in basketball
with Brother August, and sparring in tetherball. Some of the
sophomore class mothers were even kind enough to provide a
continental breakfast and a lunch of fried chicken.
