Mount
Michael's First Annual Sports Night
Mount Michael’s First
Annual Sports Night was enjoyed by all on the evening of February
5th in the Mount Michael Gymnasium.
The evening started at 6:00
p.m. with a social hour in The Armory. Cold drinks were served
while people were allowed to meet, greet, and chat.
At
7:15, Brother James Pope gave the signal for people to move
to the gymnasium and be seated for dinner. Dinner itself was
catered by Abraham Catering service. Grilled Fillet Mignon
with balsamic shallot bordelaise and crispy onions, boneless
chicken breast of chicken fresca with garlic, tomatoes, proscuitto,
and Italian cheese were served as the main course. Along with
the main courses, garlic whipped potatoes and fresh vegetable
medley were served. After dinner, chocolate pecan tart with
three sauces was served as the desert.
As dinner began to wind down, Master of Ceremonies Kevin Kugler
of 1620 AM radio called people’s attention to the podium
as the evening’s main event began.
First, a short speech was given
by Senior Alex McKnight. Afterwards, the Benedictine Awards
were presented jointly by Kugler and Lee Corso. The Benedictine
Awards were presented to Bernard (Bernie) Lorkovic, Dennis
Mailliard, Kevin Miller, Dan Mueller, and Scott Stanard. All
of these men have been volunteer coaching at various schools
and organizations in and around Omaha for years and years.
After the awards were presented,
Corso was asked to speak. During his speech, Corso told several
stories from his life. He also commented that Nebraska fans
are the best fans in the nation. One of his predictions, though,
was that the Eagles would win the Super Bowl 17-14, which
proved to be incorrect. He ended his speech with the observation
that his family members were his best friends.
The evening was enjoyed by all
who were in attendance and we look forward to next year’s
banquet.
