Son Dinner is a Success!

Every
year at Mount Michael we entertain our mothers at Mom Prom,
and honor our fathers at the Father-Son dinner.
On April 13,
students filed into busses to go to the Indian Creek golf
course where the dinner is held each year. Upon arriving,
they meet up with their father or another male family member
or neighbor. After taking a picture, if they choose to, everyone
is seated in a large room, and that is when the fun really
begins.
A top-quality dinner is served
to the students and the fathers. And after a small dessert,
the Mount Michael Student Athlete of the Year award is given
to the student athlete who most deserves it.
Ironically,
two people deserved it this year. Ben and Blake Suing, basketball
stars among other things, received the award and dedicated
it to their coaches, and specifically to Coach Kane. Each
Suing cited the influence of different people on their lives,
and how important that was to shaping them each as individuals.
After this, the talk of the
night begins. Dr. Dan Daly, from Boys’ and Girls’
Town, spoke at the dinner. Doctor Dan Daly works at Boys’
and Girls’ Town, and has done so for 29 years.
He began by illustrating the
difference between his institution and Mount Michael, and
then moved on to the similarities. He talked about how, since
most Mount Michael fathers are responsible for their children,
this gives each of us a special advantage over many. A good
father is responsible for teaching his child, and this is
the point that Daly was trying to get across to everyone at
the dinner.
By relating an anecdote about
a child with a deadbeat father, he illustrated how a father
is responsible for a lot of the actions of a son. It takes
another male to fill that place if the father fails, and it
is no easy task replacing a father in his role of raising
a child.
After that, Fr. Michael Liebl
led a prayer, and the fathers drove their sons back to Mount
Michael. It was a very good night, and a good chance to spend
quality time with our male role model. It also provided the
chance to do a Mount Michael student’s favorite thing—eat!
