Shine at Awards Night
Well its that time of the year
again, sports are wrapping up, seniors are looking forward to
college, everyone else is looking forward to vacation. But before
the last items are packed, one last Mount Michael tradition
must be honored. Awards Night, that event designed to commemorate
all the academic and Athletic achievements of the past year.
Fr.
Richard opened the night with a prayer and introduced the first
of many speakers. Mr. Ridder spoke briefly about the football
program, as did Mr. Gathje about Cross Country and Track. Fr.
Michael then gave out tennis awards and one of the highlights
of the evening the Bausch and Lomb Science Award, which went
to Evan Freilich. Mr. Rich Hood then gave out the letters for
the Mount Michael swim team. Followed by Mr. Musson who gave
out the letters to the new wrestling team. Jim Mayberger proceeded
to give out the multiple awards given to our victorious basketball
team. Mr. Buschelman then handed out the letters to our undefeated
soccer team as well as giving Brent Lockee an award for excellence
at the San Francisco Harvard Model Congress. To round out the
sports awards Mr. Mackeprang handed out awards and recognition
to the golf players and yell leaders, as well as presenting
the various results of math tournaments that students participated
in.
Beginning the academic awards
was Fr. Louis who announced the new members of the National
Honor Society. Following him was Mr. Robinson who gave out the
HOBY award to Patrick Pick as well as the Sophomore of the Year
award to Tom Frederick. He also presented the cast of the plays
and the Excellence in Drama Award. Continuing the arts theme
Mrs. Theis presented the awards both for music and for S.A.M.E.
Following her was Mrs. Goodrich and Fr. Stephen with the results
of the Spanish and French National tests. Mrs. Ball then handed
out the Key Staffer Award to Ben Hankey. Mrs. Dowd, who in addition
to awarding Michael Gibilisco with the Humanities award, won
the Teacher of the Year award for the Omaha Archdiosese, followed
her.
Winding down the night Mr. Ridder
made an encore appearance to award the Father and Mother’s
club presidents. Keeping up the encore performances was Fr.
Stephen who awarded several scholarships as well as reading
the senior plans for college. The final presenter was Abbot
Raphael who awarded the prestigious Mount Michael Award to Ron
Kmiecik.
After all the awards were handed
out, Abbot Raphael said a closing prayer for the night and the
knights retired to the armory for the traditional snack, capping
off a wonderful night that was enjoyed by all.
