“You couldn’t wake up to anything at 6:45 A.M. that is better than chorus,” said Mount Michael junior Tim Backes. These long hours of practice paid off on Monday, May 2 when the Mount Michael chorus, band and strings ensemble performed in the Mount Michael student union under the direction of Marilynn Theis.
The Mount Michael band was the first to perform. The group played a variety of pieces including a jazzy song called “Six String Shuffle” which featured Mike Patton on the guitar. Their second piece was a more mellow song which contained an excerpt from a poem about war read by Mark Robinson. The band ended their segment with a march by Souza.
Next up was the Mount Michael string ensemble which consists of one upright bass, a cello, two violins and three guitars. The string ensemble played several songs ranging from 17th century classics to more modern jazz and blues pieces. Finishing up for the strings, Kyle Svingen and Min Ho Chang showed that they deserve the high marks they received in the district music competition as they played an incredible violin duet.
Finally the Mount Michael chorus took the floor. The chorus sang a number of songs mostly having a Christian base. This year’s chorus, which received the highest scores that Mount Michael has had in fifteen years in the district music competition, demonstrated their ability as they sang several complicated and difficult songs.
Junior Mike Patton stated on the successful performance “Mrs. Theis did well with the resources and time she had. A+ for effort and performance.” Refreshments were offered after the performance.
