New
Faces at the Mount
“We try and bring in creativity from our own homes
to the kitchen,” said Cyndi Bonow. Bonow is one of
the three new additions to the Mount Michael staff for the
2005-06 school year. She will be primarily responsible for
helping with breakfast and lunch, as well as menu planning.
Bonow has worked around food for the past 25 years of her
life. She worked everything from fast-food to hospitals to
five-star restaurants. She most recently worked a daycare
in Fremont serving around 100 kids.
Bonow will be joined in the kitchen by John Farrar who comes
to us from a catering company based out of Rosenblatt Stadium.
Since he was 5 years old, Farrar loved working in his mother’s
kitchen. He also enjoyed frequently working in his grandparent’s
restaurant in Andale, Kansas and his aunt’s kitchen
in Buffalo, New York. Farrar prepares and serves dinners
to the students and staff at Mt. Michael. He has Thursdays
off and prepares the monks’ meals on Saturday.
When asked how he got the job, Farrar said, “I asked
Mr. Spenner if he was hiring. He asked me to come out and
fill out an application and several days later I was hired.”
The
third and final addition to the staff is John Mathews. Mathews
will help Mark Robinson as the assistant freshman
dean. Mathews went to school with senior dean Eric Crawford
at St. John’s University in Minnesota. Mathews has
no previous experience as a dean, but did work as an admission’s
counselor at St. John’s.
Mathews went to Cathedral High School
in St. Cloud, Minnesota where he ran cross country and track, was on the ski
team, and played the viola in the band. “I
hope to follow in Crawford’s and Gathje’s footsteps,” said
Mathews. Teacher/coach John Gathje also came from St. John’s to Mount
Michael. For the year Mathews said, “I don’t really have any other
responsibilities than assistant freshman dean, so I just do whatever they tell
me to do.”
