Mothers
and sons gather for dinner and dance
The
Mount Michael Mom Prom has always been a big deal for all
of the Mount Michael students and their moms. It is an event
that everyone enjoys, even though the students will sometimes
hesitate to admit it. From Mr. Robinson’s dancing lessons
to the final song of the night, the Mom Prom is totally unique
from all other Mount Michael events.
Preparations
for the Mom Prom began on the previous Sunday with freshman
dean Mr. Robinson’s dance lessons for the moms and their
sons. This helped to make the night
more comfortable for the students when they were at the actual
dance. Hap Abraham Catering helped prepare for the Mom Prom
by cooking the great meal that was served at the event. Junior
mom Teri Wiese had been getting ready for the Mom Prom for
weeks by drawing the portraits of all the seniors.
Most sons
and mothers started off the night by getting their pictures
taken. Afterward, Father Richard opened the ceremony with
a speech, which was followed by a story from Student Council
representative, freshman Steven Anderson, a speech from senior
class president Jono Matt, and a poem from student body president
Phil Schulte. After this, a delicious dinner of either roast
beef or chicken, with sides
of potatoes and vegetables, and, of course, apple pie was
served. With the gifts of roses, the students then led their
moms onto the dance floor and danced the night away. For freshmen,
the idea of dancing with their moms for an entire night seemed
a little intimidating. After they got out on the dance floor
and just enjoyed themselves, the night turned out to be a
lot more fun than they thought it could have.
The Mount
Michael Mom Prom truly is a night of pure fun. Sophomore Ben
Larsen said, “The Mom
Prom makes the moms feel like they’re back in high school
again.” The Mom Prom gives the students a chance to
bond with their moms. The moms do so much for their sons,
so it’s only fair that the students do this dance for
them. The students sometimes seem to dread this event, but
when they think about it; all the students really do enjoy
spending an evening with their mothers. As put by junior Phil
Ervin, “The Mom Prom was really long, but I really enjoyed
spending the time with my mom.”
