Knight Chemists Placed 1st and 2nd

Recently four teams of Mount Michael students got a chance to display their knowledge in the field of Chemistry at the UNO/Creighton Chemistry Field Day. These students, coached by chemistry teacher Aaron Musson, had practiced for this event for over a month. The event, which is held every year, took place on April 1 at Creighton University. Mount Michael sent three teams in the primary division and one team in the advanced division.

Teams participated in various events throughout the day, which were prepared by UNO and Creighton faculty as well as student volunteers. Students were tested during the day by balancing equations, identifying solutions, and answering chemistry trivia questions. After the competition was over, awards were given to the teams who performed best overall and in individual events. In the advanced division, Mount Michael’s senior team, made up of Mike Gibilisco, Tim Huss, Sam Weitkemper, Evan Freilich, Jeff Kucirek, and alternate Steve Dunning, took first place overall.

In the primary division, Mount Michael’s primary team “Rubidium”, comprised of sophomores Sam Lathrop, Ryan Nho, Will Nicholson, Derek Stieren, and Zach Rohweder, earned second place overall. There were also two other teams of sophomores who placed ninth and tenth in the primary division. Those participating were John Lundgren, Don Park, Min Ho Chang, Tom Horgan, Dae Ho Kim, Alex Cihak, Kevin Reidelberger, Mike Schulte, Colten Venteicher, and Andy Jewell. Regarding all of the students who participated, Musson said, “I’m really proud of all the effort the students put in to prepare for this event. I think we performed really well in almost all of the events. The students found that the effort they put into this paid off.” Musson looks forward to Mount Michael’s future success in the UNO/Creighton Chemistry Field Day.
