National Honor Society Induction

Sunday, April 30, students gathered in the chapel along with their families to celebrate the induction of 10 new students into the Edward E. Malone chapter of the National Honors Society. Students are selected for membership in the society based on four principles: character, scholarship, leadership, and service. The induction was led by Father Louis Sojka, O.S.B., the NHS chapter advisor.

Fr. Louis commenced the ceremony by welcoming the new candidates and their families, as well as the previous members. He then gave a brief history of the NHS chapter’s namesake, Father Edward E. Malone. Father Malone started his religious calling at Conception Abbey in Missouri, the motherhouse to Mount Michael’s abbey. He then came to what was then St. John Vianney Seminary where he taught many classes and participated in various aspects of the community.

After Fr. Louis finished, he introduced current NHS chapter president Sam Weitkemper, who explained the importance of membership in the society. Weitkemper then called upon senior member Mike Gibilisco, who commented on the NHS principle of scholarship. Next was junior member Paul Hotovy. Hotovy enlightened the new candidates on the ideal of service. The third characteristic was leadership, which was presented by senior member Tim Huss. Afterwards junior member Jacob Pflug spoke about character.

Now that the candidates knew more fully about the organization they were about to join, the initiation process could begin. Students gathered around the center candle and lit their own candles from it, symbolizing the light they will now bring to the world. The ten new members were juniors Ben Christiansen and Kelson Hedderich and sophomores Will Nicholson, Sam Lathrop, Colten Venteicher, Zach Rohweder, John Lundgren, Josh Fedde, Derek Stieren, and Andy Jewell.

The inductees and their families met with current members in the student dining room for cookies and lemonade to celebrate their accomplishment.
