Mount Michael Benedictine to Have New Varsity Basketball Coach

At the completion of the 2006-07 season Mount Michael’s head basketball Jim Mayberger ‘83 stepped down as head coach.

Mayberger coached Mount Michael’s junior varsity for nine seasons before taking over the program during the 2002-03 season when Mount Michael’s legendary coach, Jim Kane, became ill. During his five seasons as head coach Mayberger compiled a varsity record of 67-45 and led the Knights to two state tournament appearances which included a trip to the 2005 state final. Mayberger’s history with Mount Michael basketball dates back to the early 80’s when he was a player and guided the Knights to the state championship twice.

John Roshone has been named the new head coach. Roshone, a 1999 Mount Michael graduate and current history teacher at Mount Michael, has served as the junior varsity coach for the past five seasons. Roshone is only the third head coach in Mount Michael Benedictine’s 37 year history.

Like Mayberger, Roshone also has a long history with Mount Michael basketball. John’s father, George Roshone, was an assistant football and basketball coach for 23 years before retiring in 1993. John Roshone played for both Mayberger and Kane and was a starter on Mount Michael’s 1998 and 1999 state qualifying teams.

Coach Mayberger will be missed and his dedication not only to the basketball program but to the school is greatly appreciated. The entire Mount Michael community wishes Coach Mayberger the best and thanks him for all that he has done for Mount Michael. Mount Michael looks forward to Coach Roshone continuing Mount Michael’s rich basketball tradition.
