MOUNT MICHAEL HONORS LOCAL YOUTH COACHES
AT THIRD ANNUAL SPORTS NIGHT

Slide Show - Omaha World Hearld

Elkhorn, NE – The Third Annual Mount Michael Sports Night, honored five local youth coaches for their commitment to youth sports in the area with the Benedictine Award. The five honorees are Darryle Todd, Bob Elliott, Wes Rodgers, John Schroeder and Jim Elliston. Former Husker and CSTV Commentator, Trev Alberts gave the keynote address. The evening was hosted by another former Husker, Damon Benning.

The Benedictine Award was established to honor the contributions of volunteer coaches of elementary/junior high sports programs in the state of Nebraska. The award will be given in memory of long time Mount Michael coach, Jim Kane. Individuals receiving the “Benedictine Award” are individuals whose lives reflect the values of St. Benedict – dedication to Christian ideals and commitment to community. They have served in a volunteer capacity at the elementary/junior high level for a minimum of five years. They must have acted as a volunteer and have received no compensation for their efforts. In the spirit of Coach Kane, they must exhibit a love of the game and the ability to encourage each child to make the most of his or her God-given talents.

Darryle Todd has been involved with youth basketball and other sports over the past 20 years, most recently with the North Omaha Bears football program and the Unity Stars basketball program. The Unity Stars are a unique organization, accepting all young men and women who commit to their organization, with a focus on developing highly competitive basketball teams. Each year the Unity Stars are one of the best programs in the very competitive Kellom Basketball League and this year, Darryle coached the sixth grade team to the Kellom League Championship.

Since 1998, Bob Elliott has been devoting hundreds of hours to running the Saint Vincent De Paul basketball program for both boys and girls. He does all of the administrative work, financial work, scheduling, and day to day operations. Bob fills in for teams that need coaches on a regular basis. Bob is also very active in the Parochial Athletic League in Omaha.

Wes Rodgers was instrumental in creating the Heartland Premier and has remained active with the program for the past nine years for youth in third through eighth grades. Wes dedicates his time each year to developing the skills of many basketball players with many different levels of basketball fundamentals. Wes is truly committed to the improvement of players on and off the court.

John Schroeder has been an active member of the athletic committee at Mary Our Queen for over five years. He has coached basketball and soccer for boys from the fifth to seventh grade. John believes in the child and encourages fundamentals first and treats every child with respect, while encouraging the players to achieve their very best. Goals for each child are set with the capabilities of the child in mind. John shares his love of the game with all of the players he coaches.
Jim Elliston has coached for years in both the Suburban and Keystone baseball leagues. In addition, he volunteers for the St. Cecilia’s track program and has served for two years as team manager for youth hockey programs. Jim has also served as the president and coach for the St. Cecilia’s soccer club for over five years. He is the president of the boys’ booster club for three years and has been an active member for ten years. Jim lives a live of Christian values and commitment to community, which he instills in the young people he coaches.

In February 2005, Mount Michael hosted the first annual Sports Night on campus. Sports Night is an event that raises money to support Mount Michael students. The event brings nationally recognized sports celebrities to Elkhorn as keynote speakers. The speaker in 2005 was Lee Corso from ESPN’s College Gameday. In 2006, National College Football Hall of Fame Coach, and former University of Nebraska Football Coach and United States Congressman, Dr. Tom Osborne was the feature speaker for Sports Night.

Mount Michael is proud to recognize Darryle Todd, Wes Rodgers, John Schroeder, Bob Elliott and Jim Elliston with the 2007 Mount Michael Benedictine Awards.
