2008 Benedictine Award Winners Announced
Mount
Michael Benedictine is proud to announce this years four
outstanding recipients of the “Benedictine Award” as
Mike Beacom, George Heaston, Greg McHale, and Dave LaFave.
This award is given in memory of Mount Michael Benedictine's
Coach Jim Kane. The award is given to recipients whose
ives reflect the values of St. Benedict: dedication to
Christian ideals and commitment to community.
Mike
Beacom has been a volunteer in the Cedar Bluffs community
sports program for twenty years. As a coach he instilled
in his players the love of the game while emphasizing teamwork
and good sportsmanship. He coached the Cedar Bluffs baseball
program from 1973-1987. He also coached the softball program
in the 1980’s & 90’s. Rounding out his service
he has been a volunteer umpire for 20 years and PA announcer
for Cedar Bluffs Football for 20 years.
George
Heaston started the St. Thomas Moore Football Program in
1993 and has coach every year since. He has overseen fundraising,
equipment management and the annual sign-up. He is noted
as a great leader & motivator who is dedicated to his
team, church and family. He never puts an emphasis on winning
but wants the kids to learn the fundamentals of the game
while having fun. He puts special stress on the fact that
school work and grades come first.
Greg
McHale has been the soccer coordinator & coach
at St. Stephen the Martyr School for 15 years. He was responsible
for the construction of the soccer field at the school and
its maintenance. The program supports 24 teams and a micro-soccer
program at St. Stephen’s. The program serves over 500
children. He insists that all of his players participate
equally regardless of their abilities.
Dave LaFave has coached and managed the KWAA Buccaneer Football
program for the past seven years and been the general manager
the past four years. He is noted for his hard work, loyalty,
and sincerity. He coordinates fundraisers and manages all
the equipment. He makes sure that no one is left out and
that all players are having fun while molding them into better
football players and fine young men.
The award
winners will be honored at a Mount Michael Benedictine's
Sports Night to be held on Saturday February 9, 2008 at
Mount Michael. UNO football Coach Pat Behrns will be the
featured speaker.
