Sports
Night: Volunteer and be willing to take risks to find
success.
This
year’s Sports Night held at Mount Michael was
attended by 200 guests honoring four Nebraska volunteer coaches.
Recipients of the “Benedictine Award” were Mike
Beacom a long time volunteer for the Cedar Bluffs community
sports program, George Heaston who oversees the St. Thomas
Moore football program, Greg McHale a soccer coach and coordinator
at St Stephen the Martyr and Dave LaFave who coaches and
manages KWAA Buccaneer football. Speaking on behalf of all
four honorees Greg McHale spoke of the importance of volunteering
and encouraged everyone to become volunteers and share whatever
talents they have for the benefit of society.
After
the presentation of the awards, Coach Pat Behrns of the
UNO Mavericks addressed the crowd. In his talk Coach
Behrns told the audience that in our lives we will meet failure
but while we don’t like it we need to learn to overcome
it. Rebounding form failure shows character. He also said
we need to learn to evaluate ourselves to make ourselves
better and be determined to make a difference in the world.
We need to make good decisions and be willing to take risks
to accomplish things. Without risk you may not fail but neither
will you truly succeed.
Several
of Coach Behrns former
players at UNO were in attendence
including Mount Michael Alumni Pete Hoppe '90 and John
Dustin '97.
The Master of Ceremonies for the event was J. J. Davis
of KPTM 42.
